Top 5 Animators of All Time

drawings above of me by Pat Smith
I went out to Montauk for a glorious weekend with my trusted Scribble Junkies mate, Pat Smith, and while drinking alcoholic beverages and we got into a heated argument as to who are the greatest animators. As usual, we totally disagree as to the top 5, so we decided to ask you, our faithful readers, for your opinion. What are the 5 Greatest Animators of All Time? They can be from any country and any era. Studio or Indie, it's up to you.

We want your top 5 list before the end of August so we can print the list, so you, our dear fans, can decide once and for all who are the greatest animators of all time! Get to it! Send your list as soon as possible!

Below is my list of the top 5 greatest animators:
  1. Winsor McCay
  2. Milt Kahl
  3. Preston Blair
  4. Joanna Quinn
  5. Hayao Miyazaki

  13. At the moment:

    Hayao Miyazaki
    Milt Kahl
    Richard Williams
    Yoshinori Kanada

With a tie between Yuri Norstein and Frederic Back for the last spot. Bill Tytla's hovering just outside.

Pat....Norstein is a huge influence on Hayao Miyazaki. I find his work hypnotic and deeply personal. It has nothing to do with art school brainwashing, and, frankly, I'll personally take him over Glen Keane (talented as he may be).

  14. 1. Chuck Jones
    2. Go Nagai
    3. John Lasseter
    4. Nick Park
    5. Aleksandr Petrov

  15. I cannot come up with a top 5, since there are so many with unique talents. However, I'm very surprised no one has mentioned Norm McClaren who would be in my top list as an extraordinary visionary and craftsman--pioneering and influencing at least a generation that followed.

  16. Thanks for the kind add Bill but these are really the best top 5....

    1. Bill Plympton
    2. Caroline Leaf
    3. Michaella Pavlatova
    4. Aleksandr Petrov
    5. Koji Yamamura

and to top them all for extra stretched exaggeration and sheer belly laughs is Tex Avery.

  17. 1. Bruno Bozzetto
    2. Tex Avery
    3. Karel Zeman
    4. Alexander Alexeieff
    5. Norman McLaren

but I think it is not fair to limit to 5: I would have liked to include also Jiri Trnka, Jan Svankmajer, Nick Park, Osvaldo Cavandoli, Zlatko Grgic, Michaela Pavlatova, Isao Takahata, Pavel Koutsky, Paul Driesen. Well, I cited other 9 names, even a top ten list is not enough...
